Moth cocoon
Monday, August 03, 2009
One fine morning as I was walking to my car in the parking lot, I spotted this lump of hair stuck on a wall. Being the curious me, I took a closer look and saw something moving inside. Lo and behold, it was a caterpillar!

I think it has just built this silk cocoon not too long ago. The hair you see sticking on the silk cocoon are actually the hair from the caterpillar itself. Cool huh? It's a form of protection not only at the stage as a caterpillar, but also at the pupa stage. Nature is amazing.

Taken later in the night. The caterpillar was no longer moving.

I was hoping to be able to document the process of it until it transforms into a moth. So the next few days, I kept checking it out to see the progress.

Trying to get a silhoutte of the insides.

I wonder if those are the detached legs of the caterpillar (bottom)

For a few days, there were no progress. So I did some reading on the internet. It looks like this could possibly be a brown tussock moth's pupa. And it takes about two weeks for it to transform fully into a moth.

The brownish-reddish pupa

But one night, I reached back home and as I did my usual round of checking, I was so sad to find the cocoon being ripped off. Ripped open. The insides nowhere to be found. Except that I saw what could have been the pupa - squished flat on the floor. And with some whitish stuffs from it. Looks like someone stepped on it!!!

Urgh. Me sad. Me sad.

So ... those are all the pixies I've got :(

Yikes! looks like the hair couldn't protect it against the mighty shoe :P

And you should have put up a no entry sign around it.
