Sabah - Rungus Longhouse
Monday, November 19, 2007
After spending the first day and night in Nexus Karambunai, we started the next morning with a trip to Kudat. We rose early in the morning, and waited for our tour guide. And waited. And waited. And waited. He was late and had kept us waiting for more than half hour. Bad service, but I shall not rant on that!

The ride to Kudat was pretty bad. The road condition was bad, I have never seen so many patches on a stretch of road >_< And I think the driver cum tour guide was going at about 70-80 kph on that kind of road condition -_-" Bumpity bump~

Our first stop for the day was at the Rungus Longhouse in Bavanggazo. It's a traditional longhouse built on stilts by the Rungus tribe.

The "tourist" longhouse that we were brought to was pretty amazing. I think almost all the parts of the longhouse were handmade! From the walls to the steps, the floor to the roofs! Even the tables! Using wood and bamboo and such. The roof was made from some kind of leaves (I forgot what!) >_<

I found the patterns on the walls most fascinating >_< The knockings on the barks of the trees to flatten them left behind such lovely patterns.

The Rungus tribe is also known of its handicraft, especially their beadworks. Chains, necklaces, bracelets, etc. I bought a small, lovely butterfly brooch >_<

We were also served lunch in the longhouse. A variety of vegetables and meat served with rice. I kinda like the rice - the texture and fragrance of it. It's like a mixture of glutinous and white rice coupled with brown rice. Chewy! If my memory serves me right, I think it's called padi bukit.

Didn't eat much 'tho, I'm not a very adventurous person when it comes to food :P

We saw something interesting as we were brought around the longhouse and the outsides. There was this really huge cage outside, almost hidden by the plants and bushes! Lo and behold, it was a pig cage. A cage traditionally used to put a pair of adulterers in, and be thrown into the sea or river to drown them as a method of punishment. zham-jue-loong >_<

Nah, we didn't get any traditional performances or dance. And nope, the people there don't dress in their traditional costumes. I was told they only don them when there's a performance or dance. And, we (the tourists) had to pay extra if we wanted to see it -_-"

Soon after, we thanked the people there and headed off to our next destination - the Kudat Golf & Marina Resort.

More pics in my [gallery].
